What is Ashtanga Yoga
Ashta = Eight. Ashtanga Yoga is a form of Yoga based on 8 'limbs' (or components) - it's a full yogic system and the basis of most dynamic yoga practices as we know them in the Western world today. It is a rigorous form of yoga - the physical limb (or practice) puts emphasis on linking breath to movement with focused 'looking places' (drishtis) and 'energy locks' (bandhas). When you practice Ashtanga you always practice the same series of postures in the same order and in the same way (with more or less modifications allowed depending on how strict your teacher is!). Once you have learnt the series you can proceed to somewhat forget it and practice becomes a moving meditation. Many Vinyasa yoga teachers practice Ashtanga as their own practice.
